Question
Is it permissible to use the venom of animals (like scorpion and snake venom) in medical treatment?
Answer
All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.
It is well known among the scholars that poison is pure and that it is prohibited because of the harm expected from it. If it is possible to avoid its harms and trustworthy physicians have proven that it can be used in treating diseases without harmful effects, then there is apparently nothing wrong with using it for medical treatment. However, if all or even part of it cannot be assuredly safe, then it is prohibited to use it in medical treatment, for the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said, “Allah does not put a cure for my ummah (i.e. Islamic nation) in that which He has forbidden to them.” [Ibn Hibban]
