Islamic Email Obliging to Forward to Number of People

Question

I receive some emails containing supplications, hadiths and verses from the Quran, but some of them read, “Forward this to at least ten of your friends. It is a trust upon you over which you will be held accountable for on the Day of Judgment!" Is it permissible to do this?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

When a sender writes in these emails, "is a trust upon you" and the like of phrases suggesting an obligation, then it is not incumbent upon you to do anything in this regard. They are merely trying to intimidate people with such words, which are considered idle and worthless and entail nothing on your part.

Allah knows best.
