Guidelines for the seekers of guidance

Question

I am trying hard to reach the way of guidance, so help me.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

It is easy for the person who seeks the way of guidance to reach it, as long as he/she meets its requirements and avoids its hindrances.

Here are the most important guidelines:

• Seeking guidance truly and sincerely, for Allah will not forsake the one who is truthful when seeking guidance.

• Starting to move towards the right path and Allah will facilitate it. Allah says (what means): {As for he who gives and fears Allah. And believes in the best [reward], We will ease him toward ease.} [Quran 92:5-7]

• Acquiring Islamic knowledge as much as possible in order to move with enlightened steps, since knowledge helps one refute malicious allegations and misconceptions.

• Being keen on increasing one's faith by performing many acts of worship, but after observing the obligatory acts.

• Keeping company with pious and righteous people and avoiding those who could lead you to doing misdeeds.

• Repenting and regretting past sins, while asking Allah for steadfastness and protection [from sins] in the future.

• Believing firmly that this is the way of happiness in this world and the Hereafter, and that diverting from it results in misery in both worlds.

• Ignoring people's pleasure and displeasure. Let the pleasure of Allah be your first concern. In a Hadeeth on the authority of ‘Aa’ishah may Allaah be pleased with her: "The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) informed us that he who seeks to please Allah on the account of displeasing people, Allah will be pleased with him and will make people pleased with him as well; and he who seeks to please people on the account of displeasing Allah, Allah will be displeased with him and will make people displeased with him as well." [Ibn Hibbaan]

Finally, we implore Allah, The Almighty, to guide the questioner and grant her success, and we hope to hear of her good news soon.

Allah Knows best.
