Dreams and choosing a spouse

Question

I want your kind opinion about my engagement. I am a religious man who works in Italy. Several months ago through a friend, I met a religious girl in Egypt. We agreed to become engaged. In the beginning everything was fine: the family accepted the proposal, my fiancée made the Istikhara prayer and liked the results. Afterward she said she felt fine. However, at night she frequently had bad dreams particularly about me. She asked the Imam at the mosque about these dreams. According to him she has internal conflict about me. So, she likes me, but she worries about me after the dreams and the Sheikh's reply. Recently, she told me the dreams have stopped. How do you see this situation?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the World; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.

A believer should not depend on dreams and should not make them a reason to disagree with the proposal of a person who sounds good. A dream brings pleasure but does not make any harm, Insha Allah. Abu Saeed al-Khudri narrated from the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) that he said: "If anyone of you saw a dream which he liked, then that was from Allah, and he should thank Allah for it and tell it to others; but if he saw something else, i.e. a dream which he did not like, then that is from Satan and he should seek refuge with Allah from it and should not tell it to anybody, for it will not harm him" . Imam al-Bukhari also narrated from Abu Qatadha that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "A good dream is from Allah, and bad dream is from Satan; so, if anyone of you had a bad dream which he disliked, then he should spit on his left and seek refuge with Allah from it, for it will not harm him" .
Therefore, this young lady should follow the steps mentioned in the above Hadith. If she dreams something unpleasant she should spit to her left side, seek refuge with Allah from that dream and should not inform anyone about it. She should also keep away from Satanic insinuations since he is keen to create differences between Muslims and to separate those who come together for a good purpose.
Allah knows best.
