Question:

In Islam I know you are supposed to keep your house clean, but what about being disorganized with papers all over the house and a huge pile of clean clothes etc.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

No doubt, Allah and His Messenger love regularity in the life of the Muslim. Allah has urged Muslims to this practice as He Says (what means): {Verily, Allah loves those who fight in His cause in rows (ranks) as if they were a solid structure} [Quran 61:4]. One could notice the same meaning in the Prophet's order to adjust the rows in prayer. Moreover our religion is the religion of purity, and cleanliness. Ritual purity is an important condition for the correctness of the prayer. Ablution and Ghusl (ritual purity) are the major means of purifying oneself. You may find these meanings in the saying of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, he said: “If there was a river at the door of any one of you and he took a bath in it five times a day would you notice any dirt on him”? They said: “Not a trace of dirt would be left” The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) added “that is the example of the five daily prayers with which Allah wipes out evil deeds”. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]. In another Hadith a person said to the prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ): “Verily a person loves that his dress should be fine, and his shoes should be fine. He (the Prophet) remarked “Verily, Allah is graceful and He loves grace” [Muslim]. Therefore a Muslim should keep his house well organized. There is no tidiness if clothes or pieces of paper are spread everywhere in the house. A Muslim should take care of his house and try to keep it clean and organized because Allah is Graceful and He loves Grace. Sometimes the mess in one's house can be reflected in one’s own behavior. Therefore, one starts to neglect good appearance and there is no doubt that this behavior does not suit a Muslim.

Allah Knows Best.
