Question:

I am a doctor working in an addiction treatment centre of a hospital in a rented building. It is a government-aided building. But the money given by the government is insufficient to pay the rent. To pay the extra rent the hospital management collects donation from patients who are able to pay. Accepting donation, is unlawful. This donation is collected without the knowledge of government. My salary is also from this donation. Is this salary Halal? Without collecting this donation rent or my salary cannot be paid. I would be very grateful if you could give the reply as soon as possible.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If this center is a governmental institution run administratively and financially by the government, then you should work there according to the regulations put by the government. In this case, the center works in conformity with the government's regulations and you should not collect donations without the permission of the government.

But if this center is an independent institution and the government is only one of the parties that donate for it, then, it is lawful for you to raise donations and your salary is lawful.

Allah knows best.
