Who was the Companion Al-’Arqam ibn Abi Al-’Arqam?

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Al-'Arqam ibn Abi Al-'Arqam was a noble Companion whose real name was ‘Abd Manaaf ibn 'Asad ibn ‘Abd Allaah ibn ‘Amr ibn Makhzoom, and his nickname was Abu ‘Abd Allaah.

Ibn As-Sakan said that his mother was named Tumaadhir bint ‘Huthaym As-Sahmiyyah, and he was one of the  people who embraced Islam in its early stages. It is narrated that he was the seventh person to embrace Islam. [Al-Haakim]

His house was located next to Mount As-Safa. In the early days of Islam, the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, used to meet the Companions at his house, until they were forty in number with the conversion of ‘Umar ibn Al-Khattaab . When there were forty Muslims, they came out [to declare their faith openly]. Al-'Arqam participated in the Battle of Badr and 'Uhud as well as other battles.

The Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, granted Al-'Arqam a house in Madeenah. He died during the caliphate of Mu‘aawiyah in 55 AH.
