He said his testimony of faith while drunk

Question

I said my shahada while drunk, does this nullify/negate it?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

A drunk person who is not conscious of what he says, his words are not taken into account because such a person has no valid intention. However, if he knows what he says, then his words are taken into account. Allaah Says (what means): {… do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated until you know what you are saying.}[Quran 4:43]

Moreover, it is confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Indeed actions are judged by intentions.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “If one were to ponder over the sources and evidences of the Sharee’ah, he would find that the Law Maker [i.e. Allaah] does not take into account words which the speaker did not mean, and which he said without indenting them, like a sleeping person, a forgetful person, a drunkard, an ignorant person, a coerced person, a person who makes a mistake due to extreme happiness, extreme anger, or due to acute sickness and the like.

Based on the above, it would become clear to you whether or not your utterance of the two testimonies of faith when drunk is considered.

On the other hand, if ‘by uttering the two testimonies of faith’, you mean you intended to embrace Islam, then you may utter them again now. Also, if you had prayed, then if a non-Muslim performs the Islamic prayer, he is considered a Muslim; Ibn Qudaamah may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “If a non-Muslim performs the prayer, he is ruled to be a Muslim, whether he is in Daar-ul-Harb (enemy territory) or is in Daar-ul-Islam (territory of Islam), and whether he prayed in congregation or individually.

Allaah Knows best.
