No Basis for Hadith ‘No Group of People Assemble Except that One of Them is a Wali of Allah’

Question

As salaam alaykum our teachers, what is the meaning of this prophetic hadith: " In every group of 40 Muslims among them there is a waliyyu-Llaah."

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The mentioned Hadith is fabricated and is not attributable to the Prophet, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam.

Shaykhul-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “As for the circulated report reading, ‘No group of people assemble except that one of them is a Wali of Allah (i.e., close ally of Allah),’ it is false and fabricated and could not be found in any (reliable) Hadith books. How could it be authentic, and this group of people may be disbelievers or dissolute and die while adhering to such beliefs?” [Majmoo’ Al-Fatawa]

Al-’Ajlooni said in his book Kashf Al-Khafa’: “Al-Qari said: ‘It has no basis (in the Sunnah) and it is false (and fabricated).’” [End of quote]

Allah knows best.
