Ruling on working in a company which operates in permissible and forbidden sectors

Question

As salam o alaikum,I am a software engineer working for a retail company. They deal with a lot of items including edible which are both halal and haram. I am currently working in a project (which is temporary) which creates some reports for the plants that manufacture haram food. Is it okay to work there.

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Assuming the mentioned report about the plants was purely a scientific report, which can be of benefit in both prohibited and permissible foods, and was not intended to be used in the production of prohibited foods or to improve their production, then in this case it is permissible to work on this temporary project with your employer.

However, if the intention of preparing this report is to produce or improve the production of prohibited foods, then it is not permissible for you to work on this project, and you must refrain from accepting it, and instead you may work in this company in its permissible fields.

Working in companies that operate in different fields – permissible and forbidden- is permissible, if the employee does not work in the forbidden sectors or fields in these companies.

Allah knows best.
