Experiencing sexual arousal while making istinjaa’

Question

One time, as I was wiping my penis off after I had urinated, I felt sexually aroused. I immediately stopped wiping. I thought that I was sexually aroused because of it. However, no semen came out. I had a doubt concerning my ritual purity. Therefore, I performed Ghusl (ritual bath). Please note that I only meant to wipe my penis to make sure that I was fully purified from urine. Please advise me whether my action invalidated my fasting? What shall I do if this happens to me again?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and messenger.

The fasting person has to avoid all that which may arouse his sexual desire. The following was reported in a Hadeeth Qudsi, “Allaah says, ‘… he (the fasting person) abandons his food and drink for My sake.’” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] What you have mentioned does not nullify your fasting as long as you only meant to purify yourself, not to masturbate, by the act of wiping. Also, since your action did not cause a discharge, your fasting is valid, as unanimously agreed upon by Muslim jurists.

You would not have been required to perform Ghusl unless you had discharged semen since, in normal conditions, semen does not flow unless caused to. However, there is nothing wrong with your making Ghusl.

You should be careful in the future. In any case, there is no problem if that happens again as long as there is no intention for sexual arousal.

Allaah Knows best.
