A suicide bomber has attacked a bus carrying police in Kabul, the Afghan capital, causing a number of casualties.

Zemarai Bashary, an interior ministry spokesman, said on Tuesday: "Initially we have around 10 killed and injured. Still the injured are being evacuated from the spot."

A police official, who declined to be named, said the bus had been full of police on their way to work and was destroyed.

He said there was a possibility it may have been a double suicide attack as a motorcycle next to the bus was also blown apart.

Body parts

Another police official, who wished to remain anonymous, said: "The report we have indicates that so far 12 police have been killed and 15 wounded."

The blast, on the western outskirts of the city, happened at the start of the morning rush hour.

The front of the bus was blown apart by the blast, shop windows were shattered and blood and body parts strewn on the ground.

A police officer at the scene said women were among the dead and he had picked up the bodies of a number of children.

Ambulances attended the scene which was cordoned off by police.

At the scene of the attack, Mohammad Amin Fatemi, health minister, said: "They are animals. They don't have any respect for humanity."

It was the second suicide bomb attack in Kabul in four days. Twenty-eight soldiers and two civilians were killed in a similar attack on a bus on Saturday.

An intelligence official, who declined to be named, said: "It seems to be a copy of the attack on the army."
