Introduction
Islam is a complete and perfect way of life revealed by Allah to guide humanity to truth, justice, and success in this life and the Hereafter. A correct understanding of Islam is essential, because through it, a person worships Allah the Exalted properly and lives a purposeful life.
To understand Islam correctly, one must look at two inseparable elements:
When these are understood together, Islam appears as it truly is: a religion of guidance, mercy, and balance.
The Foundation: Divine revelation
The foundation of Islam is revelation. The Qur’an is the word of Allah the Almighty, revealed as guidance for all people. Allah the Almighty says: “Indeed, this Qur’an guides to that which is most upright.” (Qur’an 17:9)
And He the Almighty also says:
“Indeed, the judgment belongs only to Allah.” (Qur’an 12:40)
The Sunnah of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) explains, clarifies, and demonstrates the Qur’an in practice. Allah the Most High says:
“…And We revealed to you the message [i.e., the Qur’ān] that you may make clear to the people what was sent down to them and that they might give thought.” (Qur’an 16:44)
For this reason, Muslims take both the Qur’an and the Sunnah as their primary sources of guidance.
Do Islamic teachings have wisdom and Purpose?
Islamic rulings are based on Divine wisdom, even if human beings do not always fully understand them. Allah is All-Wise, and everything He legislates contains benefit and justice.
Allah the Almighty describes the mission of the Prophet (peace be upon him) as:
“And We have not sent you except as a mercy to the worlds.” (Qur’an 21:107)
This mercy is reflected in all aspects of Islam. For example:
“Indeed, prayer prevents immorality and wrongdoing.” (Qur’an 29:45)
“O you who have believed, decreed upon you is fasting as it was decreed upon those before you that you may become righteous.” (Qur’an 2:183)
“Take, [O Muḥammad], from their wealth a charity by which you purify them and cause them increase, and invoke [Allāh's blessings] upon them. Indeed, your invocations are reassurance for them. And Allāh is Hearing and Knowing.” (Qur’an 9:103)
These examples show that Islamic teachings aim to purify the individual and build a just and compassionate society.
Understanding Islam Correctly
Misunderstanding occurs when:
Islam rejects both approaches.
The correct method is:
The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: “Whoever Allah wishes good for, He gives him understanding of the religion.” (al-Bukhari & Muslim)
This understanding (fiqh) is not just memorizing information, but deeply comprehending the religion in a way that leads to correct action.
The harmony between text and purpose
Islamic scholars have always emphasized that the teachings of Islam combine both:
Allah the Exalted says:
“Allah wants to make clear to you [the lawful from the unlawful] and guide you to the [good] practices of those before you and to accept your repentance. And Allah is Knowing and Wise.” (Qur’an 4:26)
Thus, the texts guide us, and their purposes help us understand how to apply them correctly.
Conclusion
A correct understanding of Islam is built upon:
This balanced approach protects a person from confusion, extremism, and error. It enables the Muslim to live Islam as it was revealed: a religion of truth, mercy, and guidance for all of humanity.
