Question:

Asalamwalakum. Firstly my parents wish for me to buy a car and pay of my debts to my relatives who lent me money for my studies. However I can only inshallah do one of these things at the moment. If I get a car I know it may help my parents be of use so pleases them but I also need to pay my realtives but as they are family they probably dont mind after however long I pay them back (even though thay may not want the money back- I will still try to give them).Inshallah Jazakhallah.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If your debt is delayed to an appointed time and its time has not yet come, or that your creditors allow delaying its repayments with their own consent, then in our view you should buy the car if this will please your parents and they will benefit from it in fulfilling their needs.

That is because it is desirable to hasten to repay the debt whose deadline has not yet come, and being kind to the parents and pleasing them is among the best good deeds. Moreover, if they order you to buy a car from which they will benefit, and it is possible for you to do so without being harmed, then this is likely to be an obligation on you and it is known that an obligation comes in priority over what is desirable.

Allaah Knows best.
