Question:

What is the degree of authenticity of the Hadeeth that includes words of encouragement to recite Chapter Yaa Seen (from the Quran) for our dead, and the Hadeeth which indicates that Chapter Yaa Seen fulfills the purpose for which it is read? When it is read, will the reward reach the dead?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Ma’qil ibn Yasaar, Allaah be pleased with him, narrated on the authority of the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, that he recommended the recitation of Chapter Yaa Seen chapter  for the dead. [Ahmad, Abu Daawood and Ibn Maajah]

However, two narrators of this Hadeeth are unknown. Shaykh Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him considered this Hadeeth to be weak (inauthentic).

After thorough research, we could not find the second narration in any of the Hadeeth books, and we did not find any mention of it by any of the scholars of Tafseer (Quranic exegesis) when mentioning the merits of Chapter Yaa seen.

Additionally, you can read about whether or not the reward for Quran recitation for the dead reaches then in Fataawa 86828 and 84122.

Allaah Knows best.
