Question:

Assalaamu alaikum. Is it sunnah to say rabbana lakal hamd aloud after raising the head from ruku in salaah(with jamaat).

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

Scholars state that the permissible Tahmeed [uttering "Rabbanaa wa lakal-hamd" (O our Lord! To You be all perfect praise)] after raising the head from Rukoo`, and Takbeer [uttering “Allaahu Akbar” (Allaah is the Greatest)] other than the Takbeer of Ihraam (at the start of prayer), should be silently.

The Islamic Fiqh Encyclopedia reads: “As for Tasmee` [uttering "Sami`a Allaahu liman hamidah" (May Allaah answer he who praises Him)] and Tahmeed [uttering "Rabbanaa wa lakal-hamd"] on raising the head from Rukoo‘: the Imaam should utter Tasmee` aloud, and everyone should utter Tahmeed silently."

Hence, the Imaam utters aloud "Sami`a Allaahu liman hamidah" and both the Imaam and those who are being led in prayer, as well as the person who prays alone should say "Rabbanaa wa lakal-hamd" silently.

Allaah Knows best.
