Children of Umaamah bint Abi Al-'Aas, may Allaah be pleased with her

Question:

I have a question about Umamah bint Zainab (ra). Did she have any children from Ali ibn Abi Talib (ra) and did she marry anyone else after Ali's (ra) martyrdom and have children from that man? I've heard that she later married one of the sons of Harith ibn Abd al-Muttalib (ra). Some Sunni and Shia sources say that the lineage from the Prophet (pbuh) is only through Fatima al-Zahra.
Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

 

Ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him mentioned in his book Al-Isaabah quoting some scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them that Umaamah bint Abi Al-‘Aas may Allaah be pleased with her neither had children from ‘Ali may Allaah be pleased with him nor from Al-Mugheerah ibn Nawfal ibn Al-Haarith ibn ‘Abdul Muttalib may Allaah be pleased with him who married her after the death of ‘Ali may Allaah be pleased with him. However, he (Ibn Hajar may Allaah have mercy upon him) quoted some other scholars may Allaah have mercy upon them as saying that she had a son from Al-Mugheerah may Allaah be pleased with him who named him Yahya and he used to be nicknamed by him (i.e. he used to be called Abu Yahya).

As regards the details on what is meant by Ahlul Bayt (i.e. the family of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention )), please refer to Fatwa 87526.
