Question:

As Salaam Alaikum Wa Rahmatullaah Wa Barakatuhu... I am writing because I would like to know the meaning of the description "Marry the loving and the fertile" What is it that makes a woman be seen as "loving" ? What are the qualities she should have?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds.  I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

"Al-Wadood" or "the loving one" means the one who tries to make herself loved by her husband, and it is possible for a wife to be characterized by this description by the following:

1-      The wife should know the position of her husband and that he is her protector and the one who spends on her. Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {Men are in charge of women by [right of] what Allaah has given one over the other and what they spend [for maintenance] from their wealth.}[Quran, 4:34] Therefore, she must fulfill his right upon her. On the other hand, he must also fulfill her rights upon him. For more on the rights of the spouses towards each other, please refer to Fatwas 85308 and 85167.

2-      Obeying her husband in what is permissible: the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “If I were to order anyone to prostrate to someone else other than Allaah, I would have ordered the wife to prostrate to her husband for the right that Allaah had put for him over her." [At-Tirmithi]

3-      Beautifying herself for him: it is reported that Ibn 'Abbaas may Allaah be pleased with him said, “Indeed I like to beautify myself for my wife in the same manner I like her to beautify herself for me, as Allaah The Almighty Says (what means): {And due to them [i.e. the wives] is similar to what is expected to them, according to what is reasonable.}[Quran, 2:228]”

4-      Having good conduct with her husband and being keen on pleasing him: “Shall I not inform you about the best of your wives from among the women of Paradise, it is the one who is loving and prolific and who returns to her husband with good who if she harmed her husband or that she is harmed by him she would come and take him by his hand and then would say, 'I swear by Allaah, I would not sleep until you become pleased with me.'” [An-Nasaa'i]

5-      Having good relations with the family of her husband and helping him in being kind and dutiful to his parents and in keeping ties with his kinship.

Allaah Knows best.
