Question:
Assalam o Alaikum I am a computer teacher by profession and also work online for different peoples worldwide. One of my jobs is to enter takeaways/restaurants menus to their websites for online order. This job is UK based and I am working as an employee for a company T2S who makes contracts with these takeaways/restaurants and send their menus to me to enter to their website, and I am paid by this company T2S. These menus come from both Muslims and Non-Muslims, it means sometimes some items on a menu are Haraam not the whole menu e.g. pork items or from drinks wine etc. My question is that, is it permissible for me to enter these kind of items from menu to website, when I am not selling/using these items, and I am only paid to enter text from scanned menu to website? Second question is also part of first question, if according to your knowledge it is not allowed even to input these items from menu to website, Can you please tell me that can I work for that part of menu which is not Haraam e.g Chicken items, Lamb items, Pizzas, Burgers etc. and skip the items which are Haraam, do you think that way I can work for these kind of menus to make my earning Halal? Please try to reply me as soon as possible and also guide me with Ahadees. Thank you very much Abdul Qayyoom
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.
As for entering the menus that include prohibited items such as alcohol and pork, it is not permissible for you to enter them. The fact that you do not sell or buy them does not exempt you from sin because you are appointed to enter those menus, make ordering them easy and refer people to them. Allaah The Almighty says (what means): {But do not cooperate in sin and aggression}[Quran 5:2]
For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 83206.
However, if your work is confined to entering the menus that do not include something prohibited, then there is no blame on you to do that and to earn money from it.
Allaah Knows best.
