She suspects that her neighbor gives the evil eye

Question:

Really I am very very confused in this matter. there is a lady in my area, whenever she looks at my babies it seems like evil eye, i mean she stares (to gaze fixedly and intently) in such a way that it surely looks like evil eye. But she is reading Quran, prays salat, her children are Hafez. so I am really really confuesd, how come she looks like so badly. once we had a quarrel with her. but my husband helped her husband a lot. so we think they are ok now. even though she is wearing neqab and pray a lot she doesnot look like a purified person. Also sometimes she makes some problems with other neibours. please please let us know what should we do now? Is she really looking so badly to my babies? Is she jealous or why she is doing like this? I trusted her but should I trust her anymore? please answer my question , i am really in trouble because they sometimes come to my home.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

We cannot decisively assert that this woman is jealous of you or that she gives your children the evil eye. However, we have previously clarified in Fatwa 128834 the prohibition of thinking ill about Muslims without evidence. Also, we have clarified in Fataawa 85883 and 3273 how to seek protection from the evil eye.

Hence, we advise you to always protect your children from the evil eye [by reciting Athkaar, i.e. rememberance of Allaah] and conceal their good features. You should not be suspicious about this neighbor, and you should be keen on being kind to her.

Ibn Al-Qayyim may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “Among the treatment for the evil eye and seeking protection from it, is to conceal the beautiful features of the person who is feared to be affected by the evil eye with something that would prevent the evil eye, as Al-Baghawi said in his book Sharh As-Sunnah that ‘Uthmaan may Allaah be pleased with him saw a handsome boy and he said: 'Blacken the dimple in his chin so that he will not be affected by the evil eye.’

Allaah Knows best.
