Question:

Assalaamualaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh In certain copies of The Qur'an, I have come across a Waqf (Stop) called Waqf Ghufraan. Please let me know if this waqf is an authentic Saheeh waqf (has it been found in authentic hadith to stop and seek forgiveness at these points? Is there a specific supplication to be recited at this Waqf (if so please mention the hadith)? Jazakallahu khayran. Thank you for all your assistance.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His Slave and Messenger.

The scholars of Tajweed and Quran sciences have mentioned the kinds of Waqf (i.e. recitation pauses in the Quran), like the Taamm (full), Hasan (good), Kaafi (sufficient), and Qabeeh (bad), and they have explained what each of them means.

We have not come across anyone mentioning what is called Waqf Ghufraan (forgiveness pause).

If you know the authority that confirmed such a Waqf in that copy of the Quran, then you may ask it for its evidence in the matter. If they have authentic evidence about it, then it is acceptable. Otherwise, you should advise them to stop doing so.

Allaah Knows best.
