Question:

Me and my friends have made many people gathered in a public place and like an event but did not tell what is it about. When all the people gathered i asked my fiance for the marriage proposal as a public proposal. She doesn't know about it. She cried and i hugged her in front of many people. are these kinds of public proposals allowed in Islam.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

There is no harm in announcing your wish to marry your fiancée publicly; however, the fact that you embraced her as mentioned in the question is impermissible and unacceptable because you are considered a non-Mahram man to her until you conduct the marriage contract. Therefore, you should repent for doing so. Please refer to Fataawa 86143, 86527, and 88434.

As for the religious ruling on the assembly of men and women in one place, there is no harm in that as long as the due Islamic rulings are observed: that women adhere to the due Hijab and modesty in dress, and men are separated from women by a space or a barrier. For more benefit, please refer to Fatwa 84281.

Allaah Knows best.
