Question:

What are the contributions of Imran ibn Husain in Islam?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

‘Imraan ibn Husayn Al-Khuzaa‘i Al-Ka‘bi Al-Basri may Allaah be pleased with him  whose surname was Abu Nujayd, was a prominent Companion who converted to Islam in the year of Khaybar (7 AH), and he participated with the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, in several battles, and he held the banner of his tribe, the Khuzaa‘ah.

He was one of the virtuous Companions and a jurist among them. The angels used to greet him with Salaam and talk to him until he was cauterized. Mutarrif, said: “'Imraan ibn Husayn said to me: "The angels used to great me with Salaam until I was cauterized. When I was cauterized, the angels left it. When I left it, the angels greeted me again.” [Muslim]

He assumed the office of judge in Basrah for a short period and then he asked to be exempted from it and was granted exemption. He died in the year 52 AH during the caliphate of Mu‘aawiyah may Allaah be pleased with him.

Ath-Thahabi said about him in Siyar A‘laam An-Nubalaa’: “‘Imraan ibn Husayn ibn ‘Ubayd ibn Khalaf Al-Khuzaa‘i, was an example, an Imaam, a Companion of the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, Abu Nujayd, Al-Khuzaa‘i. He, his father and Abu Hurayrah converted to Islam at the same time, in the year 7 AH. He narrated many Ahaadeeth from the Prophet, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam. ‘Imraan ibn Husayn assumed the office of judge in Basrah, and ‘Umar may Allaah be pleased with him had sent him to the people of Basrah to teach them Islamic knowledge. Al-Hasan swore that no one better than ‘Imraan ibn Al-Husayn had come to them in Basrah.

Abu Khushaynah said: “Al-Hakam ibn Al-A‘raj said that ‘Imraan ibn Husayn, said: "I never touched my penis with my right hand after I pledged allegiance with it to the Messenger of Allaah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam."

Qataadah said: Mutarrif narrated: ‘Imraan told me during his final illness: "The angels used to greet me with Salaam. If I live, conceal it for me." Imraan died in the year 52 AH may Allaah be pleased with him.” [End of quote]

You may read more about him in Siyar A‘laam An-Nubalaa’ and in Al-Isaabah fi Tamyeez As-Sahaabah.

Allaah Knows best.
