Question:

How authentic is the Hadeeth which reads "If you name a child ‘Muhammad’, do not beat or deprive him"?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The Hadeeth in question was narrated by Al-Bazzaar may Allaah have mercy upon him on the authority of Abu Raafi' may Allaah be pleased with him. Al-Haythami in Majma' Az-Zawaa’id said, "Al-Bazzaar narrated this Hadeeth from his Shaykh Ghassaan ibn ‘Ubayd whom Ibn Hibbaan and other narrators judged as trustworthy, and the Hadeeth is weak." Shaykh Naasir Ad-Deen Al-Albaani may Allaah have mercy upon him classified the Hadeeth as weak.

Allaah Knows best.
