Question:

Assalaamu alaykum. I have a question regarding affiliate marketing of hotels where they also sell haram things such as alcoholic beverages and pork. When a client comes to my website and clicks on the add to go to the hotel and book it, I get a commission of a certain percentag. The only thing that I wish to know is the following: if the hotel serves alcoholic drinks and haram foods such as pork, am I earning haram money then? Should I stay away from this?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The view that we adopt in our site is that taking a commission on advertising for staying in hotels is permissible in principle, even if the hotels sell alcohol and other forbidden matters, because the intended benefit for hotels in general is residence, which is a permissible benefit.

Also, since the existence of alcohol and the like in hotels is widespread, it is quite difficult to issue a ruling forbidding dealing with hotels that offer what is forbidden.

Accordingly, there is no harm in working in marketing hotels, and the commission that you get is not forbidden, even if the guest in the hotel buys alcohol or pork or the like.

For more benefit, please refer to fatwa 308935.

Allaah knows best.
