Question:

Is it allowed to take pictures of anything including men and not capturing pictures of women? Am I allowed to wear underwear only in order to wax before marriage?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His slave and Messenger.

It is permissible to take pictures of inanimate objects. The Encyclopedia of Fiqh reads, “There is no religious impediment to taking pictures of the inanimate objects that Allah, the Almighty, created – as they were created, without modifications – such as the mountains, valleys, seas, the moon, the sun, the sky, and stars; this is absolutely permissible, and there is no difference of opinion among the scholars (regarding that), except for a few who held an odd view in this regard.

As for taking pictures of living beings such as men, the scholars held different views regarding it, and it is better that you refrain from taking pictures of them. For more benefit, please refer to fatwa 83249.

It is permissible for you to take off some of your clothes in the presence of other people as long as you are covering the ‘Awrah. We have previously underlined that the ‘Awrah of the man is what is between the navel and the knee in fatwa 84742.

Please refer to fatwa 87794 about the ruling on body hair removal for men.

Allah knows best.
