Question:

Assalamualikum
I am married to a barelvi family.they follow all rituals of barelvi sect.they visit shrines also.and also my husband offer only juma prayer.is my marriage valid or not?I am confused.plz reply me.May Allah rewad u with goodness.JazakAllah

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

If your husband believes in what this sect believes about the saints and pious people, and that they can benefit and harm, and he calls upon them instead of calling upon Allah, and he seeks their help and does similar acts that take a person out of the fold of Islam; is he does so, then this marriage is not valid, as Allah Says (what means): {And do not marry polytheistic men [to your women] until they believe. And a believing slave is better than a polytheist, even though he might please you....} [Quran 2:221]

However, if he only commits innovations that do not take a person out of the fold of Islam, such as attending their festivals (the Barelvi sect) and the like, then the marriage is valid.

On the other hand, if what you mean by “he does not pray except on Friday”, is that he does not pray at all with the exception of the Friday prayer, then he is in great danger and his matter is very serious. However, abandoning the prayer without denying it (its obligation) does not take him out of the fold of Islam, according to the view of the majority of the jurists, and thus, your marriage is valid.

Nonetheless, if what you mean is that he only prays the Friday prayer in the mosque [but he prays at home or elsewhere], then there is no effect of this on the validity of the marriage.

It should be noted that one should make an appropriate choice when choosing a husband before marriage. A believing woman should not accept as a husband except the people of righteousness. Abu Hurayrah may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "If a man whose religion and moral conduct are pleasing to you proposes to you, then give him your daughter in marriage; if you do not, then great mischief and corruption will spread on earth." [At-Tirmithi and Ibn Maajah]
