Selling Video Games Containing Shirk: Impermissible
15-3-2020 | IslamWeb
Question:
Salaam Alakium,
I have a question about selling video games which contain some Shirk, Years ago i purchased games which i didn't know contained Shirk - or i never really understood the seriousness of it in Islam, now that i am full on focused on my deen and i am very careful on how i practice my religion i no longer play video games, but i have some games which i have spent money on which i would like to sell to get my money back? Is it permissible for me to resell the games to get my money back (or make a profit) if those video games contained Shirk? Or should i just rip them up and throw them inside the bin.
Thank you in advanced :)
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
We ask Allah to grant you success. You should know that it is prohibited to sell any asset or benefit that is prohibited, and its price is unlawful, as stated in the Hadeeth which reads: “When Allah prohibits something, He prohibits the price paid for it.” [Ahmad and Ibn Hibbaan in his Saheeh]
Accordingly, if this game actually contains elements of Shirk (polytheism), then it is impermissible for you to sell it.
Allah Knows best.
