Wearing Pleated Skirts Is Forbidden in Some Cases

Question:

Asalm alaikom
What is ruling on wearing pleated skirts? I've heard they wore them in greece for ceremonies ( i don't Know if they were religious or not) so i was wondering if it was haram to wear them because of this since they are quiet common nowadays.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The basic principle is that it is permissible to wear such skirts. Accordingly, there is nothing (Islamically) wrong if a Muslim woman wears them as long as no non-Mahram (marriageable) men would see her wearing them.

The fact that disbelieving women wear these skirts does not necessitate, on its own, deeming it prohibited for the Muslim woman to wear them. It would be forbidden for the Muslim woman to wear them only if wearing them is peculiar to the disbelieving women and no other women wear them; in such a case it would be forbidden because they would be imitating the disbelieving women.

Allah Knows best.
