Question:
Assalamu alaykum. InshaAllah your in good health. Me and my husband just brought a house but we had to borrow half of the money from a normal bank which charges interest. The house and the loan are under both of our names because that's the way it had to be and that's how my husband wanted it to. I know it is haram to take out a loan from banks that charge interest and I have advised my husband many times about this matter and that we should just stay on rent. But he has a different view and says he does not want to be paying rent all his life and says it is a necessity and that its OK to bye a first home without going to extreme comfort. And said he will do his best to pay it of as soon as possible inshaAllah. Even though I still felt uncomfortable with his decision. As a wife I stood by him. But I still feel really bad and depressed about this situation. I am really scared in disobeying Allah. I wanted to know in our situation am I still responsible for this sin or just my husband alone. Will I be accountable for it in the hearafter ? Jazakallah kair.
Answer:
All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, is His slave and Messenger.
Riba-based (interest-based) loans are basically forbidden, and whoever takes such a loan and then regrets it and repents to his Lord sincerely, Allah, The Exalted, accepts his repentance and forgives his sin. Therefore, you should ask Allah, The Exalted, to forgive you for cooperating with your husband in taking that loan based on the default assumption that it is impermissible for you to take it, which is most likely the case. Your husband should also repent to his Lord.
If a person repents of his sin in the worldly life, he will not be held accountable for it in the Hereafter. Generally speaking, among the conditions of repentance are giving up the sin; regretting committing it; seeking forgiveness from Allah, The Exalted; and resolving never to commit it again in the future.
