Question:

A person was traveling and he wiped over his socks. Two days later he returned home at the time of the Maghrib prayer while wiping was still valid. Should he perform the prayer with the wiping of travel or should he wipe anew? May Allaah Reward you.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger.

When a person wipes over his socks when traveling and then he resides or wipes in residence and then he travels, in the two cases he is required to wipe like the resident. This means that his wiping is valid for only one day and night. In Al-‘Umm, Ash-Shaafi‘i may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “When a resident wipes and then he travels, he is considered a resident. Likewise, when a traveler wipes and then resides, he is considered a resident as well.

An-Nawawi may Allaah have mercy upon him said: “The opinion of Ash-Shaafi‘i which is held indisputable by all his companions is that when a person wipes when traveling and then resides, he wipes like a resident. If his Wudhoo’ with wiping was invalidated in less than one day and night, he can complete the term; if he spent a day and night or more in travel, the term is over as soon as he arrives.

Consequently, that person is required to take off his socks and then make a new Wudhoo’ where he washes his feet.

Allaah Knows best.
