Question:

Salam alaikum... My bride to be just called me that she has secured a job Bank (riba). And am afraid and feeling like to cancel our wedding plans.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

The basic ruling is that it is not permissible for the wife to leave her husband's house when there is no necessity without his permission. But if the wife stipulated on her husband in the contract that she should be allowed to go out for a permissible work, then that condition is valid and binding according to the preponderant view. Refer to Fatwa 62059 for more information.

As for working in usurious banks, it is not permissible, and earning from it is forbidden, so it is her husband’s right to prevent her from going out to work in that bank, whether she stipulated that in the contract or not. You can refer to Fatawa 105477 and 392380 for more information.

Explain that to her and inform her of the sayings of scholars in this regard, and tell her that you will not allow her to go out for this work and that she must obey you.

If she responds and gives up work in usurious banks, then praise be Allah, you have achieved your goal, and that is a blessing.

But if she insists on staying in that forbidden work, then how can you marry a woman who insists on disobeying her Lord and her husband!

Allah knows best.
