Supplications after Prayer

Question:

I am a new Muslim and have received contradictory advice concerning Prayer.a) What is the proper order after Prayer? Astaghfirullah - Anta as-Salaal - then Tasbih followed by La ilaha...la Sharika, or the other way around? b) Does one recite these verses immediately after the Fard prayer, or can it be postponed until after the Sunnah? I was recently asked for the first time to lead prayer. Needless to say, I was honored. I have prayed among Turks who after Fard would recite brief Salawat, then Sunnah, followed by Astaghfirullah-Tasbih. I did this practice, and afterwards a Brother came forward and (with beautiful Adab_ suggested I pray the Dua after Fard and before Sunnah. Is there a “correct” way?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

What the brother advised you that the supplications should be recited after the obligatory Prayer and before the Sunnah Prayer is correct. According to the Sunnah, when the praying person finishes his Prayer, he should utter before changing his sitting position: Astaghfiru Allah (I seek the forgiveness of Allah) thrice. After that, if he is an Imam, it is desirable for him to face the worshipers who are led in Prayer. Then, he may recite other supplications proved by the Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ).
