Smoking and Ablution

Question:

If a man is with ablution and he smokes, is his ablution still valid?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

Know that smoking has no effect on the validity of ablution, although smoking is a sin.

However, we advise smokers to avoid such a bad habit after performing ablution, since ablution means purity and being free from all impurities in the body, especially the mouth. In addition, the bad smell that is caused by smoking is forbidden according to the opinion of most scholars.

Thus, it is worthy of a Muslim to avoid such a bad, harmful plant as tobacco. He should also not spend his money on such an action, which sensible people avoid.

We pray to Allah to help smokers to avoid and overcome such a bad habit.

For more benefit on the nullifiers of ablution, please refer to Fatwa 84093.

Allah knows best.
