Urine Drops during Prayer

Question:

I belong to the Hanafi school of thought. Sometimes while praying a drop of urine comes out. In this case, should I continue my prayer or stop? If I continue, is my prayer right or should I repeat it? This does not happen always. Here to fore, when it does, I repeat my previous prayers just in case.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

All Muslim scholars are agreed upon that the discharge of urine is among the nullifiers of ablution.

Ibn Qudaamah may Allaah have mercy upon him wrote in al-Mughni: “Ibn al-Munthir said that all Muslim scholars are agreed upon that the discharge of urine from the private parts of a man or woman, discharge of excrement or wind from anus, and discharge of Mathi (pre-seminal fluid) are among the nullifiers of ablution. So, one has to renew his ablution after the discharge of those things.

The evidence for this is the Hadeeth of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) who said: “Indeed Allah does not accept the prayer of any one of you if he breaks his ablution unless he performs it (ablution) again.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Therefore, whoever is sure of discharging a drop of urine or the like during his Prayer, he should stop his Prayer since his ablution is invalidated. This ruling is because the discharge of urine is occasional. However, if he is not sure of any discharge, rather it is just an assumption, then he has to continue his prayer without interruption. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was asked about a person who feels something in his abdomen while praying and he replied: “He should not leave the Prayer until he hears a sound or smells something.” [Al-Bukhari and Muslim]

Allah knows best.
