Question:
why do you need to shave a babys head after its born?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
The majority of scholars are of the opinion that it is likable to shave the new born's head on its seventh day and that the weight of that hair in silver is given as Sadaqa [ Abud Dawood and Muslim ].
Reported Ahmad and al-Hakim from Ali-Ibn Talib he said: 'The Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) slaughted a sheep on behalf of Hassan and he said to Fatima; shave his hair and give a weight of silver similar to the weight of his hair as Sadaqa' .
It is clear that the shaving is for both the baby boy and the baby girl. But Al-Maziri said that it is dislikable to shave the female's hair. For some Hambalis, the hair is shaved on the seventh day as the above Hadith is general.
The Hanafis are of the opinion that cutting the hair of the baby on its seventh day is not sunna, it is only a lawful act.
On the other hand, there is an advantage in shaving the baby's hair and giving its silver value as alms to the poor and the needy to show thankfulness to Allah.
It is also good for the baby's skull as it removes any impurities and dirt that could be there.
Some scholars believe that the meaning of the Hadith that says about the baby: "Remove all impurities from him" is that its head should be shaved.
Know dear brother that whatever is proved from the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) we must follow it regardless of whether we know the wisdom or not. Allah says: {It is not for a believer, man or woman, when Allâh and His Messenger have decreed a matter that they should have any option in their decision.} [33:36].
Allah knows best
