All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger.
It is Sunnah that the person puts on his or her shoes while sitting. The evidence for this is the Hadeeth of Jabir ibn ‘Abdullah that ‘the Prophet denied that the person puts on his or her shoes while standing.' [Abu Daawood and Al-Albani graded it as authentic]
Mubaarak Poori said in Tuhfatul-Ahwathi: “'Al Khattabi said: ‘Denying that the person puts on one's shoes while standing is because it is easier to put them on while sitting. Also, one might fall if they put them on while standing. So, it is recommended to put them on while sitting as in such a position one can comfortably use his hands and avoid any harm.'” [End of quote]
Al-Mudhaffar said: “This ruling is about the shoes whose wearing needs some work like the boots and the shoes that have laces which need to be fastened together.”
Know, dear brother, that this denial does not mean prohibition; it is only an advice. So, if the person puts on his or her shoes while standing, he does not commit a sin.
Allah knows best.
