Question:
During Du'a (supplication) can a person curse another person or a nation? The reason for this question is after Jumuah on last Friday the Imam was supplicating loudly and cursing Yahoodi and Nasrani due to Iraq war. What is your opinion on Iraq war?
Answer:
Praise be to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds; and may His blessings and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon all his Family and Companions.
It is permissible for a Muslim to make Du'a for oppressed Muslims, whether it is made for a person or a group. It is also permissible to invoke Allah against oppressors and aggressors. Du'a could be made during prayer or at any other time. It is reported in Musnad Ahmad that the Prophet (Sallallahu Alaihi wa Sallam) said: "O Allah! Fight against Kuffars who deny your Messengers and prevent people from your straight way. Send on them Your Wrath and Your Torment. O Allah! Fight against those who are given the Book" .
The author of al-Mufhim said: 'there is no disagreement in cursing Kuffars and making Du'a against them' .
Allah knows best.
