Question:

Is it good or prohibited for Islamic scholars teaching in an Islamic school or in any school teaching Islamic knowledge to collect salary or money for teaching, because in has devoted all is time for the teaching. If it right what is the evidence according to the Qur'aan and Sunnah.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Al-Khateeb Al-Baghdaadi may Allaah have mercy upon him said regarding receiving wages for Islamic knowledge teaching, like the case of teachers in colleges of Sharee'a: 'It is an obligation upon the Imaam to provide wages for whomever is appointed to teach Islaamic jurisprudence and Fatwa rulings, an amount which will make him free from being obliged to taking (another) profession or seeking other means of provision. He has to give him the money from the treasury. However, if there is no treasury, or the Imaam did not appoint some money for him, and the citizens agreed to give him some money in order for him to provide them with Fatwas and give them answers to the problems they face, then this is permissible.'

Allaah knows best.
