Use of nutmeg

Question:

My question is regarding the "nutmeg" spice (Joozit at-teeb) used for cooking. I have heard two things: some say it is Haraam to use, others say it is okay to use. What is the correct Islamic ruling on this?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

Ibn Hajar Al-Haythami may Allaah have mercy upon him was asked about nutmeg and he forbade it because it intoxicates and dopes. It is confirmed that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Any kind of intoxicant is considered alcohol and every kind of alcoholic drinks (intoxicants) are forbidden." [Muslim] Al-Haythami may Allaah have mercy upon him attributed the view that it is forbidden to Ibn Daqeeq Al-'Eed may Allaah have mercy upon him saying: 'The late comers of the Shaafi'ee and Maaliki schools reported this view from him and ruled according to it, and this is enough evidence.' Moreover, he [Al-Haythami ( may Allaah have mercy upon him)] also stated that the Hanbali school agreed to the view of the two afore-mentioned schools according to a text of Ibn Taymiyyah may Allaah have mercy upon him.

Allaah knows best.
