Question:

I have noticed that I am not cheerful in life. Be it at work or at home I always feel that no matter whatever good I do I am always being blamed. At work I had serious problems with colleagues who don't even have a least consideration that I am a lady. They sometimes behave very rudely even at times when I was pregnant. I do not have my parents living close to me they are back home or any other relations to go and sit and discuss with and seek advice. My husband sometimes advices me. Could you please guide me as to how to overcome this in a religious way? I am a convert.

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

First of all, all perfect praise be to Allaah, Who guided you to Islam and we ask Him to make you firm and steadfast on this religion until the day you meet Him.

You should know that this life is a test and it is very rare for a person to be free from trials and afflictions. However, we are advised in our religion to be patient when we face difficulties and calamities. The excellence and greatness of patience are stated in many texts in the Book of Allaah and the Sunnah of the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ). Some of them are mentioned in Fatwa 88764.

Firstly, we advise you to improve your relationship with Allaah. If a person is in a good relation with Allaah, Allaah will rectify the affairs between him and the people and will protect him from their evil. The Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: "Whoever seeks Allaah's pleasure by angering people, Allaah will suffice him from the people, and whoever seeks people's contentment by angering Allaah, Allaah will forsake him and leave his matters for the people." [At-Tirmithi]

Secondly, you should avoid committing sins as this is the reason of every affliction. Allaah Says (what means): {And whatever strikes you of disaster — it is for what your hands have earned; but He pardons much.}[Quran 42:30]. It is only by seeking forgiveness from Allaah and supplicating Him that one can repel the afflictions that are predestined for him.

To conclude, you should seek the reasons of such distress and endeavour to remove them. One of the reasons is your job; if you are not obliged to continue working there, then it more appropriate for you to leave it. However, if you are obliged to work, then you should look for work in another place; for the conditions of a woman to work, please refer to Fatwa 82399.

If we assume that you did not find another job, and you are in dire need for this type of work, then you should be patient and think about the people whose situation is much worse than yours.

Allaah Knows best.
