To spend on the father or to marry?

Question:

I want to marry, I am a young man and I am working. How would I bring into line between spending on my father and getting ready for marriage?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

It is an obligation to spend on a poor father, and marriage for a person who is able to marry and does not fear to commit fornication is desirable. Since you are unable to harmonize between spending on your father and marriage, then you are obliged to put in priority spending on your father over marriage. You should try to improve your income and spend appropriately [without being extravagant] so that you would save for the expenses of marriage, as in this way, you would be able to do both.

Allaah Knows best.
