Encouraging the entire congregation to marry a second wife during Friday Khutbah is not suitable

Question:

What is the religious ruling on an Imaam who delivered the Friday speech on polygamy, and at the end of the speech, he asked a covenant from the Muslims to come the next Friday having married a second wife?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

We have already discussed polygamy in Ftaawa 82124 and 86818, so please refer to them.

As regards the Imaam who delivered the Friday speech and urged the congregation to marry a second wife, there is no need for it because people are not all equal with regard to the ability of being just between two wives [or more] and meet the expenses of marriage [and spending on the wives and children]; therefore, he should not have urged the congregation to marry more than one wife without giving details about who is permitted to marry and the one who is not permitted to marry.

Allaah Knows best.
