Question:

What is the meaning of the saying of the Prophet, sallallaahu alayhi wa sallam: "I was given the Quran and the like of it with it.”?

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad is His slave and Messenger. We ask Allaah to exalt his mention as well as that of his family and all his companions.

The author of ‘Awn Al-Ma’bood may Allaah have mercy upon him interpreted: 'and the like of it with it” to mean that he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was given the hidden revelation which is not recited, or that he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was given the interpretation of the apparent revelation (i.e. the Quran) and clarifying it by generalizations, specifications, additions or deductions, or that he sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) was given rulings, admonitions and proverbs which are similar to the Quran in relation to the obligation of acting according to them, or to the amount or quantity. Al-Bayhaqi may Allaah have mercy upon him said something similar to this meaning.

Allaah Knows best.
