Question:

Assalamu aleikum I just wanted to know whether we should observe the halal meat ruling when feeding our pets also? Most of the pet food items in supermarkets, contain beef and chicken , and obviously(Since it's animal food), they dont have a halal mark on them. Are we allowed to feed our pets these pet food items which contain meats/meatflavouring and dont seem to be halal? Thank you. Assalamu aleikum

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

In principle, it is permissible to feed animals with unlawful meet, like the meat of a dead animal and the like, as long as this meat does not cause harm to the animal, otherwise it is forbidden to feed it with it because of the harm. However, it is forbidden to buy this kind of meat except in case of necessity even if this is with the intention of feeding what is permissible to be fed with the meat of dead animals. Jaabir may Allaah be pleased with him narrated that the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) prohibited the sale of the meat of dead animals. [Al-Bukhari and Muslim] If one buys the meat of a dead animal, he is helping in sin and Allaah Says (what means): {Help you one another in virtue, righteousness and piety but do not help one another in sin and transgression.}[Quran 5:2].

Allaah Knows best.
