Question:

Asalaam Alaykoum I was listening to a lecture, and during it, the shiek was talking about 3ain(evil eye) he said that a person can give some one 3ain without knowning it. Im so scared right now because a few weeks ago my baby niece died after a month of being born. I remember saying MashaAllah over and over again when i was holding her. Im not sure if after a day or soi felt jealous for not having a baby of my own and might of thought something along the line of I wish i had a baby... I feel as though the world could split and swallow me right now. Could i have given my own niece the evil eye? :'( Please advise me

Answer:

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

No doubt evil eyes are true as the Prophet sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) informed. Sometimes a person may harm one of his loved ones by an evil eye. However, as long as the enquiring sister was repeating “Maashaa Allaah” then she could not have harmed her niece. Muslim scholars have mentioned that saying “Maashaa Allaah” blocks the evil eye. They deduced this ruling from the verse (which means): {And why did you, when you entered your garden, not say, What Allaah willed [has occurred]; there is no power except in Allaah’?} [Quran 18:39]. Imaam Jassaas may Allaah have mercy upon him clearly stated that.

We ask Allaah to reward all of you for the trial that you are suffering from by loosing that girl. For more details refer to Fatwa 84035.

Allaah Knows best.
