Palestinian and Israeli Killed in Gaza
An Israeli missile strike has killed a Palestinian resistance fighter in the Gaza Strip shortly after one Israeli soldier was killed and four others wounded in a bomb attack. The fighter killed was Ismail al-Sawarka, an Islamic Jihad activist. The missile attack came shortly after two explosive devices detonated as an Israeli occupation military convoy passed near the Karni (Mintar) crossing east of Gaza City, killing one soldier and wounding four, Aljazeera's correspondent reported. The military wing of Hamas, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades, claimed responsibility for planting and detonating several explosive devices near the Karni crossing. Clashes erupted between Israeli forces and Brigades members, the correspondent added. Following the attacks, Israeli troops in about 20 armoured vehicles have begun raiding al-Shijaiya neighbourhood east of Gaza City. There has been a relative lull in clashes in the Gaza Strip since Palestinian president Yasir Arafat died of an undisclosed illness at a French hospital on 11 November. Mahmud Abbas, his successor as Palestine Liberation Organisation chairman and a leading candidate to replace him as Palestinian Authority president, has sought to convince the resistance to halt attacks to pave the way for renewed peace talks with Israel. **PHOTO CAPTION*** Palestinian boys run as they take cover from Israeli army machine-gun fire during an army operation in eastern Gaza city, Tuesday Dec. 7, 2004.
