Social evils that are destroying Muslim communities - I

The role of the individual in Islam is not limited to fulfilling the five pillars. The Muslim in an Islamic community has a greater responsibility than is usually understood. All of a Muslim's activities in life are included as acts of worship depending upon the intention underlying them. Nothing is required from a Muslim beyond service to Allah The Almighty, and nothing is accepted from him, whic...... More

Al-Khaleel Ibn Ahmad: founder of Arabic lexicology and prosody

As soon as the sun rose and cast its golden rays, the market of coppersmiths in Basra became full of activity and liveliness. Groups of people started to come to the market one after the other to purchase their goods. The workers’ hammering sounds increased as they made copper utensils. Everyone was working hard and eagerly seeking to secure their means of subsistence. In the forenoon, a re...... More

History of the Sunnah -I: At the time of the Prophet

Muslims were, early on, aware of the significance of the Sunnah and its authority. They, one generation after the other, were keen to preserve the Sunnah because they saw that as a part of the preserving of the last revelations man is ever to receive. Their efforts were unabated, and the remarkable job they did is unparalleled in the experience of any other religion or civilization. At the time o...... More

Acting upon the Quran VI

It is narrated on the authority of ‘Ali ibn Abi Taalib, may Allah be pleased with him, that he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah, sallAllahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, say, "Indeed, there will be a Fitnah." I asked, "What is the way out of it, O Messenger of Allah?" He said, "The Book of Allah, which includes the stories of those who were before you, the news of those who will come after you and the judgment on the disputes between you. It is a decisive statement and not an amusement. No tyrant left it but Allah broke him, and whoever seeks guidance in anything...... More

The Rescue is in Asking

Offering Da’wah is a great responsibility that requires not only knowledge, but wideness and kindness as well. Offering Da’wah to new Muslims is a greater responsibility since it is difficult for recent reverts, who often have little information about Islam, to realize whether or not their guides are truly versed in the teachings of the religion. This makes for a precarious situation w...... More

A person must stop doing Bid‘ah for repentance to be accepted

Question What is the ruling on Bid‘ah (religious innovation) and the person who does Bid‘ah?. Answer All perfect praise be to Allah, the Lord of the worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, is His Slave and Messenger. Innovations in religion are impermissible. The Messenger of Allah, sallallaahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said that every Bid‘ah (religious innovation) leads to going astray. [Muslim] The repentance of a person who does Bid‘ah is not accepted until he stops doing th...... More

Ideological Dualism

There are many issues in which standing midway (between the two extremes) is mere fantasy. For example, one cannot stand at the same distance from theism and atheism. There cannot be a person who is half atheist and half believer; or a person who is both honest and a liar at the same time, or pious and impious! These opposites can never meet, just like life and death. There is no grey area in this regard; it is either black or white. If you choose the white, you are refusing the black and vice versa. It is absurd to try combining the two extremes just like it is ridiculous to use division (m...... More

Boredom of life

The reasons for antipathy and hatred toward the worldly life are varied. Some people dislike this transient life out of their desire for the reward from Allah Almighty and love to meet Him. Hence, one of the righteous predecessors said: "The gift of a believer is death." Such a person detests the worldly life because his life is attached to the hereafter. Although he dislikes the life of the world, he fulfills the right of Allah Almighty and the right of His servants and endeavors to do good as much as he can – in compliance with the verse that reads (what means): {And worship ...... Attributes and abilities of Angels

They are honourable and obedient to Allah Almighty Allah has described the angels as being honourable and obedient in the verse (which means): "[The Quran being Carried] by the hands of messengers (angels) noble and dutiful." [Quran 80:15-16] Meaning, the Quran is in the hands of scribes, i.e., the angels, because they are the emissaries of Allah to His Messengers and Prophets, may All...... More

The Night Prayer (Qiyaam Al-Layl)

What is Qiyaam Al-Layl? Qiyaam' means 'standing' and 'Qiyaam al-Layl' means 'standing in night.' In the Islamic terminology, both terms refer to 'the voluntary night prayer, whose time extends from after 'Ishaa’ (evening) prayer until dawn.' Qiyaam al-Layl is also known as Tahajjud. A widespread misconception is that Tahajjud is a different night prayer than Qiyaam. The true is that th...... More

"The first thing a person will be judged about on the Day of Judgement is his prayers, if his prayers are accepted, then he will be successful, and if his prayers are rejected, he will be among the losers." [Ahmad and An-Nasaa'i]
