The pilgrimage with your father is valid despite your level of understanding at the time

Question

السلام عل??م I did hajj with my parents when i was 14 (baaligh). I was not a practising muslim then, didn't know the essence of deen, was just a cultural muslim. I'm 37 now, accepted Islam intentionally and wonder if my obligatory hajj has been performed or accepted? Am i obliged to perform hajj?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His Slave and Messenger.

Know, dear sister, firstly, that the acceptance of worship—whether it is Hajj, prayer, or any other act—is not known to people; only Allah knows it. There is no necessary connection between the legal validity of worship and its acceptance by Allah the Almighty. A Muslim may perform a valid and complete prayer or Hajj, meeting all the conditions, pillars, obligations, and recommended acts, yet it may not be accepted by Allah due to showing off. The scholars' discussion usually revolves around determining whether the worship was performed correctly or not.

The pilgrimage you performed with your father is not ruled as invalid or insufficient simply because you were at an age where you might not have been upright, lacked a deep understanding of Islam, or were born into a Muslim family. None of these factors invalidate the pilgrimage, nor does it imply a judgment on your Islam. Many Muslims at that age may not have a strong understanding of Islam. As long as you performed the pilgrimage as an adult, did not neglect any of its pillars, and avoided actions that would invalidate it, your pilgrimage is valid, and there is no obligation to perform it again.

It is recommended to repeat Hajj and 'Umrah as mentioned in the Sharee'ah due to their virtues, as they remove sins and poverty. The Prophet Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) said: “Follow up between Hajj and 'Umrah, for they certainly remove poverty and sins as the bellows remove impurities from iron, gold, and silver. And an accepted Hajj has no reward but Paradise.” [At-Tirmidhi, an-Nasa'i, and Ibn Maajah, and authenticated by Al-Albani in Saheeh al-Jaami']

Allah knows best.
