Doubtful employment

Question

Please I would like to ask you about my work. I work in a public establishment. All my work is ok but sometimes my boss tells me to do some work that I don't know if its Halal or Haram, like receiving a committee from the world bank that comes to see land in order to make a project on it. Or, for example, to try to help a company that is going bankrupt but this company is dealing with Riba loans so is it Haram to give a help to this company? What must I do?

Answer

All perfect praise be to Allaah, The Lord of the Worlds. I testify that there is none worthy of worship except Allaah, and that Muhammad sallallaahu `alayhi wa sallam ( may Allaah exalt his mention ) is His slave and Messenger.

What we know about the World Bank is that it deals with Riba (interest and/or usury), which is forbidden, in all its dealings and that it does not carry out any project without imposing interests. If this is so, then it is prohibited to receive any committee from that bank or undertake any projects for it. To do so is viewed in the Sharee’ah (Islamic Law) as supporting and encouraging others in evil and wrongdoing. Allaah Says (what means): {……but do not help one another in sin and transgression.} [Quran 5:2]

As for supporting establishments and corporations that deal with Riba, if such support involves Riba or unlawful business, then this is prohibited since it is considered assistance in sin and evil. But if helping them does not involve Riba or unlawful business, then there is no blame on that. However, to be on the safe side and stay away from sins, it is preferable that one keeps away from such dealings.

Allaah Knows best.
